PSAT Scores 2026: Release Dates and What Your Score Means
When fall 2026 PSAT scores come out, what your score and section scores mean, how the National Merit Selection Index works, and next steps.
PSAT/NMSQT scores for fall 2026 come out on October 22, November 5, or November 12, 2026. Which date applies to you depends on when your school sent in its tests, not on the day you sat the exam. Below is how to tell which wave you are in, what your score means, and how to use it to prepare for the SAT.
When PSAT scores come out in 2026
Schools could give the PSAT/NMSQT any day between October 1 and 30, 2026, or on Saturday, October 17. Scores are released in three waves:
| If your school submitted tests by | Your scores are released |
|---|---|
| October 9, 2026 | October 22, 2026 |
| October 23, 2026 | November 5, 2026 |
| October 30, 2026 | November 12, 2026 |
Schools see the results in the College Board's reporting portal about two days before students do. If you are not sure which wave your school is in, ask your counselor. You will see your scores in your College Board account.
What your PSAT score means
- Total score: 320 to 1520.
- Section scores: Reading and Writing, and Math, each from 160 to 760.
The PSAT is on the same scale as the SAT, just with a lower top end. A PSAT score is a reasonable preview of where you would score on the SAT if you took it around the same time, which is exactly what makes it useful.
National Merit: the Selection Index
If you are in 11th grade, the PSAT/NMSQT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Qualification uses a Selection Index, which counts Reading and Writing twice:
\[\text{SI} = \frac{2 \times \text{RW} + \text{Math}}{10}\]
Here SI is the Selection Index and RW is your Reading and Writing score. It ranges from 48 to 228. For example, 690 in Reading and Writing and 710 in Math give \(\tfrac{2(690) + 710}{10} = 209\). The cutoff to become a Semifinalist is different in each state and changes every year; for this year's juniors, it will be announced in September 2027. Check the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for the official rules.
How to use your PSAT score to prepare for the SAT
- Look at the section scores, not just the total. The section further from your goal is where SAT prep pays off most.
- Use the score report's skill breakdown. It shows which kinds of questions cost you points, so you can study those first.
- Pick an SAT date with enough time to prepare. The SAT dates and score release calendar has every date for 2026–27; spring dates are a natural target after fall PSAT results.
- Practice the Math with SAT-style questions. Start with our SAT math practice questions, then review the topics you miss in our Algebra 1 review.
Teacher's note: The PSAT is a practice run with real information attached, so treat it that way. A lower score than you hoped for in October is good news in disguise: it tells you, months ahead, exactly what to work on before the test that colleges actually see.
Keep practicing
